The 100 Day Project: 39 Days In

Remember when I was hemming and hawing over committing to The 100 Day Project? I am so glad that I followed my gut, and decided to do it. This project is 39/100 days in, and it has truly energized me. I love thinking up something each day, and seeing what fellow participants are up to. Here are a few of these projects I'm enjoying:

#100DaysofNotestoNana - Gina Irie

#pantone2u - Salli Swindell /They Draw & Cook

#100DaysofMiniatureIllustrations - Josefina Schargorodsky

#100DaysofAbstracts - Holland Loop

#100DaysofCollage -  Amanda Hawkins

#100DaysofMyLifeinIcons - Melanie Graham

#100DaysofAbandon - Hannah Betzel

Here are the first 37 days of my project, #100DaysofMHVignettes. I'm enjoying writing the stories as much as painting the watercolors. It surprised me how much I like writing these stories, since I haven't written creatively in years. A common thread emerged, and they all feature women, many of whom are in the middle of a big life change, or have braved the odds to follow a dream. You can read all the stories with the projects on Instagram @marissahuber, or on a Tumblr Page I created just for this project here.

Invitation Illustrations for Brunch Wedding at Valley Green Inn

marissa-huber-wedding-illustration-2.jpg

A good friend of mine is getting married this November. We met on the SEPTA 48 bus, back when we had the same commute years ago. We bonded over knitting, poppy red scarves, and she is just a beautiful person. I'm so happy that she has found such a special partner to share her life with. When they asked me to help them with their wedding invitations, I happily agreed, and knew this was one wedding present that would actually be on time! Marissa-Huber-Wedding-Illustration-Pen-InkThey're having a brunch wedding at The Valley Green Inn. This is on the Wissahickon in Philadelphia, and is a scenic area to hike, bike, or take your kids, and was so much fun to paint. I was tasked to create watercolor, pen and ink illustrations based on their brunch celebration.Illustration-Marissa-Huber-Valley-Green-Inn-Philadephia-InvitesI love drawing food. I think it's my favorite thing to draw, tied with NARS lipstick these days. Although I'm trying to not use pen & ink all of the time in my drawing these days, it's probably my signature style. It is so satisfying to fill it in with paint once you're finished (and the ink dries of course, lest it smear!)

I hope you had a good weekend, and were lucky enough to get a Mimosa like I did (thanks to an impromptu brunch with a favorite relative in town for a few hours). I'm still sad I didn't get any cake this weekend, but I'm sure I'll rectify that in the next few days.

Illustration-Marissa-Huber-Wedding-Invitation-WatercolorThese are off to the Graphic Designer who will work her magic next. I can't wait to see how it all turns out!

Crossing #10 Off the Life List

Intentions are a tricky thing. You have them in your mind, and you completely mean to do something, but you find excuses or other things take priority. Then it becomes so huge, you keep putting it off. Or perhaps that is just me! Maybe it's the impending arrival of another human being to give me the proverbial kick in the rear to put my intentions to action. Without further ado, I have finally crossed #10 off my Life List and have opened an Etsy Shop to sell paintings and drawings! If I sell something, great, but if not, I'm  happy that I actually put myself out there.

You can find my Etsy shop at MarissaHuber! I'm starting by selling my original color study paintings, and will be putting up smaller series in the future.

I tried to get the best photos I can, and I'm sure there will be a learning curve as I progress. At this point though, I'm sick of waiting for unreachable perfection and never getting anywhere.

Cheers to new beginnings!

Ice Cream Friday

During one particularly uncertain summer at work, I made membership cards for an Ice Cream Social Club to lighten things up. Anyone could join the club, as long as you vowed to eat one type of frozen treat each Friday from Memorial Day to Labor Day. We called it Ice Cream Friday: A Summer Social Event for all 50 States. A super obvious moniker combined with a ridiculously long and slightly Southern inspired tagline. Ice Cream Friday!

Without further ado, I invite you all to partake in as much ice cream or any other frozen treat this summer. Unfortunately, the membership cards are long gone (and they were laminated too!), but I drew up the instructions below.

icf 002

Rules: Eat something cold once per week, preferably on Friday. That's it. Anything counts!

Ice Cream

This year's inaugural cone was a decadent peach scoop in a sugar cone at Philly's Franklin Fountain. It was so delicious, I urged a few people in line to follow my lead on that selection.

Peach Ice Cream

Maybe I'll even try out my ice cream attachment to my stand mixer this year. I'll add that to my summer to-do list.

Citrus + Avocado

I should blame my unanticipated absence my new role at work, my volunteer position, an event I helped plan, the twice weekly Spanish lessons I'm taking, and a baby shower I'm throwing.  But it mainly comes down to one thing. Feeding the pantry and food storage obsession.

Most of my recent daydreams have been dedicated to what whole grains and bulk bin items I can scoop out and store in the carefully cleaned out jars I've been saving over the years. I dream about having matching jars found on sale somewhere that I know the contents of by sight, or with handwritten labels since I'm not a label-maker type of girl (excluding one workday frenzy with name labels and the P-Touch).

I'm using my new reference book, Rebecca Wood's The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia, to get ideas of how to incorporate new foods and grains into my diet.

IMG_4206

Last week I brought home beautiful poppy seeds that I just wanted to put my hands in. They're blue, purple, black and oh so tiny and susceptible to static cling.

IMG_4207

Citrus is in season, so I snagged some tangerines for an avocado, grapefruit, radish, arugula and citrus salad. I was inspired by this delicious and refreshing version by Martha Stewart. It reminds me of home, when I used to have a ruby-red grapefruit and orange tree in our backyard until the citrus canker hit Florida. Our neighbors traded us for mangoes, avocados and tangerines. That was the life!

IMG_4210

Big ruby reds were always my favorite. Fresh picked while warm, eaten first and then juiced for the finale. Always with a teeny bit of sugar, though it barely needed it.

IMG_4199

I tried out a red lentil and carrot soup for lunch this week. It was healthy, tasty, filling and easy to make. Fits the bill for my busy week! Avocados have had constant rotation in my morning smoothies of late as well.

IMG_4213

Lastly, the beautiful blood orange. They're so pretty on the inside, but aren't my favorite tasting citrus. However, I keep buying them to add dimension to other colors and flavors, and you know I'm a sucker for pretty colors!

¡Qué alimentos bonitos! (What pretty food! I told you I was taking Spanish!)

Imaginary Blue Violet Library

Blue violet has caught my eye my whole life. In Pantone colors, it's called Ultra Violet.  I first fell for blue-violet, the prettiest crayon in the box of 64 colors. I loved it on my Sam+Libby ballet flats with the lace up ankle ribbons in seventh grade. Blue violet colored my beloved blueberry pancakes for dinner in college with whipped cream on top. My favorite irises while helping my friend garden are in that hue. It's the color of my ombre Ray Ban sunglasses, a metallic liquid eye liner, the beautiful Le Crueset oval dutch oven from Aunt Sissy, and the nail polish I have on this instant.  Either way, I'm smitten.

Blue Violet So smitten was I, that I sketched an imaginary library for myself. If you're a reader like me, there is nothing cozier than a comfortable chair, good light, a place for a hot drink, and a cave like space for falling into a great story.

The library I designed has super glossy violet walls and ceilings. Thankfully with my unlimited imagined funds, for this type of high gloss, I was able to have it plastered, sanded and finished perfectly by a professional since the high gloss shows every imperfection (just like satin for clothes). Since the ceiling is the same color as the walls, I could even it out with some elaborate molding. I like how the edgy color in a slick finish complement the ornate old school architectural details. Simple plus crazy and a pop of color make me happy.

Blue Violet Imaginary Living Room

My fireplace provides visual and thermal warmth, and fulfills my dream to someday have one. A fun but slightly fancy chandelier and the fireplace cast and reflect glints of light across the room like fireflies. I'd choose to keep the mantel of the fireplace light in color (perhaps an alabaster mantel and hearth) for balance with the darkness everywhere else.

Blue Violet Library

I would display objects that I love like groupings of prints and paintings, and books that I actually read and enjoy. None of those fake collections of books for my library! I love looking at other people's bookshelves when I go into their home, as it's a glimpse into their personality. That's why I love seeing myJK Rowling next to Haruki Murakami, it kind of sums up my varieties in taste.

When it comes to art, knitting, cooking and crafting books, I tend to pull a few at once that I want to look at, and pile them on a table to peruse later. I'm sure I'd fill up the end table or benches (not drawn!) with books that I want to look at all at once. Then I'd have a massive cleanup every few weeks so as not to drive myself crazy. I think I'll put a knitting basked with a couple of projects in here too, though Mike is not a fan of baskets (too bad for him!).

Blue Violet Library Corner

A must have in a library are cozy chairs, down throw pillows, something made of leather so soft you can't stop touching it and an ottoman to put your feet up. There should be lamps and side tables, and an eclectic collection of wool or cashmere blankets in this room. While we're at it, how about a black pug and a black french bulldog for my companions, and a record player too. There should be a classy bar cart and some fancy spirits to go with this room too. In this fantasy, I'm the type of lady who drinks cognac and 40 year old whiskey or something like that. Perhaps this space could double as an after dinner hang out spot following a dinner party with friends?

Blue Violet Library

Lastly, I'd have to have ebony or dark black-brown herringbone floors. They are strongly featured in 97 per cent of my design dreams.

I always dream of Herringbone floors

For now, I'm going to keep looking at my OPI Roadhouse Blues nail polish and keep daydreaming!

Pomegranate Obsession

I officially became obsessed with pomegranates this year. I first realized that it was a full blown obsession when I started stocking up on 6 at a time. IMG_3780

I rationalized that I wanted to make good use of the 3 for $5 sale at the grocery store. But then a man walked up mistakenly to my cart, saw the fruit, and hollered to his wife in shock and disdain, “Elaine, what the heck is wrong with you? Why would anyone need so many pomegranates?!”

Pomegranates

Poor Elaine and her frustrated husband! I found it hysterical, it still makes me snicker. I jumped over to the cart to defend my loot, and we all had a hearty laugh about the mix-up.

Last week, I contemplated buying 8, but felt that equated to crazy cat lady type numbers in regards to fruit. Though at least this addiction is full of antioxidants!

I love to eat them in a little bowl with a spoon. They're incredible sprinkled over Andrew Swallow's Grove Salad from Mixt. They're a great addition for a crunch pop in a fruit salad, or over yogurt and granola.

Pomegranate

I’m the type of person who does all the work of seeding the pomegranates first, and enjoying the literal fruits of my labor later.

I’ve sketched up my current present way of removing the arils (in a bowl to avoid stains, and in front of my television because that’s how I roll, but on the floor because I love my sofa).  It’s a relaxing, meditative like ritual, and the arils keep well in the refrigerator.

Though my way works for me now, I’m absolutely trying this easy and logical technique via Apartment Therapy's The Kitchn next time. Hopefully, there is a next time. I don't know when they go out of season, but I nearly shed tears at ShopRite last week when I thought they were out.

Marissa's Preferred Way of Opening

Can you tell how  much fun I had with my hot pink inks?! I forgot how much I miss drawing. I can't wait to do more this year.
